How My Cleanser and Hard Water Damaged My Skin Barrier

My skin barrier didn't break down from one thing. It broke down from a combination — a harsh cleanser, iron-heavy water, years without moisturizer, and a period where skincare wasn't even on my radar.

INTRO

In the last article, I walked through the signs of a damaged skin barrier I overlooked — the stinging, the tightness, the redness, the way every product felt like too much. Once I understood what was happening, the next question was obvious.

What actually caused this?

I wish I had a single answer. It would make the story cleaner. But the truth is, my skin barrier didn't break down from one thing. It broke down from a combination — a harsh cleanser, iron-heavy water, years without a face moisturizer, and a period where skincare wasn't even on my radar. Each factor wore the barrier down a little more, and none of them were obvious to me at the time.

Here's what was actually happening, product by product, habit by habit — and what the science says about why each one matters.


The context: When my skincare fell off the radar

In April 2023, a house fire displaced my life. The insurance claim dragged on for years and eventually progressed to legal action. For a long time, skincare wasn't a priority — it wasn't even on the list.

I landed in a rental with hard, iron-heavy water. I kept using the same cheap drugstore cleanser I'd grabbed out of habit. I wasn't moisturizing. I wasn't wearing sunscreen. I wasn't thinking about my skin at all.

That's the context. Not because the fire is the whole story — it isn't. But it's the reason these other factors stacked up without me noticing. When your life is upside down, you grab the same product off the shelf, you don't research water quality, and you don't think about your skin barrier. You just get through the day.

The problem is that your skin barrier doesn't care about your circumstances. It responds to what you do to it — or don't do — regardless of what else is going on.


The cleanser: Harsh surfactants and exfoliating beads

For roughly three years, the only product I used on my face was Equate Energizing Facial Cleanser — a drugstore cleanser comparable to Clean & Clear Morning Burst. It had exfoliating beads. It foamed up. And I used it as my sole facial skincare product, without thinking much about it.

I chose it because it was cheap and familiar, not because it suited my skin. I didn't think about how the formula might affect my barrier. It cleaned my face, and that was enough.

But here's what was actually happening every time I used it.

Cleansers work using surfactants — compounds that bind to both oil and water, allowing dirt and oil to be rinsed away. That's the useful part. But research published in Dermatology Research and Practice explains that surfactants also interact with the skin in ways that go beyond cleaning: they extract skin components like lipids, enzymes, and natural moisturizing factors during cleansing, weakening the barrier function. They also remain in the stratum corneum even after rinsing, leading to chronic, cumulative exposure that disrupts lipid structure and causes continual degradation of the barrier over time. [1]

In other words, the cleanser wasn't just cleaning — it was stripping away the very lipids and natural moisturizing factors my barrier needed to function. And because I used it for years, that damage compounded.

Then there were the beads. The cleanser contained exfoliating particles, and I was rubbing them across my face regularly. A study in the British Journal of Dermatology examined what happens when mechanical irritation — friction from abrasive grains — is combined with surfactant exposure. The findings were striking: barrier disruption caused by mechanical irritation was significantly enhanced when combined with detergent exposure. The researchers noted that physical irritants like friction and abrasive grains represent a significant irritation risk, especially when acting together with surfactants. [2]

WHAT THE CLEANSER WAS DOING

Two forms of injury, at the same time, for years:

  • CHEMICAL STRIPPING Surfactants extracting lipids and natural moisturizing factors, and leaving residue behind that continues to disrupt the barrier between washes.
  • MECHANICAL ABRASION Exfoliating beads compounding the surfactant damage, because friction and detergents together are significantly worse than either alone.

So my cleanser was doing two things at once: chemically stripping my barrier through harsh surfactants, and physically abrading it with exfoliating beads. For years.

I didn't know that at the time. I just knew my face felt tight and dry after washing, which I took as a sign the product was working.

It was working. Just not in the way I thought.


The water: Iron-heavy water

The rental we moved into after the fire had hard water — and not just hard water. Iron-heavy water. The kind that leaves residue on fixtures and makes you wonder what it's doing to your skin.

I never connected it to my skin. Water is water, right? You wash your face, you rinse, you move on.

But the research suggests it's not that simple. A systematic review and meta-analysis published in Clinical and Experimental Allergy analyzed 16 studies on water hardness and skin, pooling data from over 385,000 participants. The review found a positive association between living in a hard water area and atopic eczema in children, with increased odds of skin problems in those exposed to harder water. The researchers also noted that harder water leads to higher deposition of surfactants on the skin — meaning the minerals in hard water may make your cleanser leave more residue behind. [3]

A NOTE ON THE EVIDENCE

The strongest research I found is on hard water generally — calcium and magnesium hardness — not iron specifically. I can't prove that iron-heavy water damaged my adult skin. But mineral-heavy water may have made my harsh cleanser harder for my skin to tolerate, and that's a plausible mechanism I didn't know about at the time.

That last point matters. Hard water may not have irritated my skin on its own — but it likely made my harsh cleanser worse. The minerals in the water interacted with the surfactants in my cleanser, potentially increasing how much of the stripping residue stayed on my skin after rinsing.

I was using a harsh, beaded cleanser in iron-heavy water for years. The two factors weren't just adding up. They may have been amplifying each other.


The neglect: No moisturizer, no sunscreen, no support

The cleanser and the water may have been actively damaging my barrier. But there was also what I wasn't doing.

For roughly three years, I didn't use a face moisturizer. Occasionally I'd put body lotion on my face if it felt tight, but I had no consistent moisturizer, no serum, no treatment product. I also didn't wear sunscreen — not because I was avoiding it, but because it simply wasn't part of my routine anymore.

Here's why that matters. The stratum corneum — the outermost layer of the skin — maintains its barrier function through a combination of natural moisturizing factors, lipids, and proper hydration levels. When you don't moisturize, you're not just failing to add something — you're allowing the continuous, natural water loss through the skin (called transepidermal water loss, or TEWL) to go unopposed. Over time, persistently low hydration compromises the enzymes responsible for natural exfoliation, leading to a buildup of dead skin cells and a rough, dry texture. [4]

A study in Dermatology and Therapy demonstrated what happens when moisturizer is discontinued. Researchers found that even in healthy skin, stopping moisturizer use led to significant and rapid dehydration — dryness symptoms appeared within a day. Young skin recovered in one to three weeks without moisturizer, but older skin was slower to recover and more vulnerable. [5]

I was in my early 40s when the fire happened. My skin wasn't recovering the way it might have at 25. And I wasn't just skipping moisturizer for a day — I was skipping it for years.

No sunscreen meant daily UV exposure with no protection. No moisturizer meant no hydration or lipid support to help my skin recover from what the cleanser was doing each day. The only product I was using — the harsh, beaded cleanser — was actively making things worse.


Why it wasn't just one thing

When I finally started paying attention to my skin in early 2026, I wanted to point to a single cause. The cleanser, probably. Or maybe the water. Something I could identify and fix.

But the more I learned, the more I realized it was the combination. Each factor on its own might have been manageable. Stacked together, day after day, year after year, they wore the barrier down.

Hard iron-heavy water Potentially increasing surfactant deposition on the skin, making the cleanser more aggressive per rinse. [3]
No moisturizer Leaving TEWL unopposed and preventing the barrier from recovering between washes. [4][5]
No sunscreen Daily UV exposure adding oxidative stress and photoaging on top of an already-compromised barrier.
Years of duration No break, no recovery window — the damage compounded because nothing ever changed.

My skin might have coped with a harsh cleanser if I'd been moisturizing. It might have handled the water if I'd been using a gentler product. But stacked together, day after day, year after year, they likely wore the barrier down to the point where everything stung, everything burned, and nothing felt right.

The barrier damage wasn't one decision. It was the absence of a lot of small, consistent ones — over years when I had bigger things to worry about.

I don't share this to make excuses. I share it because I think a lot of people are in a similar place — using whatever cleanser is on sale, not thinking about their water, skipping moisturizer when life gets busy. The damage doesn't happen overnight. It happens slowly, in combination, and you don't notice until your skin starts telling you something's wrong.


What I would tell anyone in this situation

If you're reading this and recognizing your own habits, here's what I'd say based on what I know now.

FOUR THINGS TO CHECK

LOOK AT YOUR CLEANSER FIRST If it foams aggressively, stings your eyes, or has exfoliating beads, it may be stripping more than dirt. The research is clear that surfactants can damage the barrier with repeated use. [1]

DON'T IGNORE YOUR WATER Hard water isn't just a plumbing issue. The evidence shows it's associated with skin problems and may make harsh cleansers even more damaging. [3] If you can't change your water, choose a gentler cleanser and be more consistent with moisturizer.

MOISTURIZE Even if your skin feels fine. Even if you're young. The research shows that stopping moisturizer causes rapid dehydration, and older skin doesn't bounce back as quickly. [5] Not moisturizing means you're not giving your barrier any hydration or lipid support to work with.

PAY ATTENTION TO COMBINATIONS It's rarely one thing. If you're using a harsh cleanser in hard water and not moisturizing, you're doing exactly what I did. The answer isn't to fix one factor — it's to address all three.

Where this journey goes next

Once I understood what caused the damage, the question became: what now?

In January 2026, I didn't start with barrier repair. I didn't even know that's what I needed. I just knew I needed to start taking care of my skin again — so I bought a gentle cleanser and a moisturizer and started a basic, two-step routine. It was a start, but it wasn't the fix. Not yet.
